An excellent presentation explaining and showing evidence of how the disparity of wealth and poverty is harmful. Not in the global sense, but in the local sense. In the U.S.A. we have a have a very high spread between the top 20% and the bottom 20% and this relates to many factors: life expectancy, mental health, crime.

I was reading "Debt: The First 5000 Years" and learning about how money did not arise from the need to provide a better system of barter, but arose out of the need to better account for debt that was already present. I still haven't completely wrapped my head around the notion, so I may have it wrong here, but this bit of an article about alternatives to the euro in Greece caught my eye:

Members start their accounts with zero, and they accrue credit by offering goods and services. They can borrow up to 300 TEMs, but they are expected to repay the loan within a fixed period of time.

Battered by Economic Crisis, Greeks Turn to Barter Networks

The new (virtual) currency is ostensibly tied to the euro (1:1) but does not require any actual euros to get in the game. I would assume there is no way to cash out either. :)

But my point here is that the creation of "money" does not require anything at all except the accounting of who owes how much. Money is debt.

I hate ads like this. It says "Five times EPA detergent requirement." More is always better, right? But doesn't that mean that I'm getting less gasoline? What if it was 50x the requirement? Would that be 10x better than 5x? Isn't this just a way to make diluted sound worth more?

carpooling makes no difference

What we find is that as you increase a city's stock of light rail or bus cars that there's no impact on the amount of driving. That sounds sort of surprising, but it's logically consistent with the other result that we have about the affect of roads on driving. What we find is that as you add roads to a city, those roads get filled up so there are people waiting to use that capacity.... As you add a little bit more capacity it gets filled up.

It's not completely laid out in this quote, but the bottom line is that as you add capacity to the road system, either by directly increasing road capacity (more lanes) or by removing people from the road (public transit) the road system "fills up" again by people making more trips, or moving into the areas that have become more reachable, etc.

One corollary of this is that carpooling will make no net difference to road congestion, i.e. will not reduce the total amount of driving.

p.s. The title of the NPR story is "More Roads May Pave The Way To More Traffic" but it's clear when you listen to it that the title should have been "More Roads Will Pave The Way To More Traffic".

long bike ride today

Today I went on a fairly long bike ride. Started in Kapolei (next to Ho Ho Chinese), went to White Plains beach to say "hello" to the family, then to Ewa Beach and stopped at Eric's house (not home). Through Waipahu, to the Pearl Harbor Bike Path and found a shortcut over to Leeward Community College. Down into the edge of Pearl City and then up the hill to Wendy's for a bite. Then returned by pretty much the same path, except I took Kapolei Parkway instead of visiting White Plains.

My phone's battery was low, so I didn't do GPS, but I did a map by hand. The trip out was about 18 miles, so maybe 30-35 miles total.

cool bike shop: trek bicycle store, chattanooga, tn

While I was on vacation in the mainland (I live in Hawaii) I wanted to check out some actual Niner bikes. The local Niner retail store on Oahu doesn't actually stock anything. While in California I went to a store near sacramento that was listed on the Niner web site (http://ninerbikes.com/dealers) as having demo bikes, but when I got there all they had was a single frame hanging on the wall.

After we visited the aquarium in Chattanooga, TN, we wanted to find a health food store, for some particulars, and the one we found happened to be right next to the niner dealer in Chattanooga: Trek Bicycle Store (http://trekstorechattanooga.com/). This store is not actually owned by Trek, and they do carry other stuff, like Niner.

They had an Air 9 and an M.C.R. I finally got a chance to test ride a couple Niner bikes! It turned out that what they had there was perfect for me since I just bought an E.M.D. (the aluminum frame) and the Air 9 and M.C.R. are the equivilent in scandium and steel. They were exactly the bikes that I wanted to check out.

If you want to check out one of Niners full suspension or single speed models, I guess you're out of luck. But from my experience they've got *way* more stuff to check out than any other "Niner dealer" that I found. That is to say, they actually have demo bikes you can test ride.

"Six years ago, bicycling was a virtually non-existent form of transportation in Seville, with less than half of one percent of all trips made by bike. Today, almost seven percent of all trips made in Seville are by bike. It's an inspiring model for American cities that are just beginning to incorporate bicycling into their transportation networks. If it works in Seville, a city with no previous tradition of bicycling or particular proclivity for innovative urban design, why not Dallas, Los Angeles, or Chicago?" (Bicycle Times 11, pg 20)

Or how about Honolulu?

It turns out that money spent on bicycle infrastructure is an excellent investment that gives good returns. All across the U.S., there are examples of projects that have had a positive impact for a tiny fraction of the cost of facilities for cars. For around the cost of one mile of highway built in a dense urban environment, $50 million, an entire network of bike lanes and other facilities can be installed in a mid-size city... [Portland] invested a relatively paltry $57 million between 1991 and 2008 and saw a huge increase in cycling with a resulting savings in health and fuel costs.... (Bicycle Times 11, pg 45)

Sounds like a really good way for Hawaii to make steps towards being more energy independent to me. If we invest in our bicycle infrastructure, how much $$ will that save in imported oil expenses?

More Roads Causes More Traffic

A quick drive on one of Los Angeles's many freeways illustrates the fact that having more roads doesn't necessarily prevent traffic. Now a study from the University of Toronto confirms it: Expanding highways and roads increases congestion by creating more demand. And building out public transportation systems doesn't help either; there will always be more drivers to fill up any new road we build.
The disheartening study used data from hundreds of metro areas in the U.S. to reach the conclusion that there is a "fundamental law of highway congestion," which essentially says that people drive more when there are more roads to drive on--no matter how much traffic there is. As a result, increased building of "interstate highways and major urban roads is unlikely to relieve congestion of these roads."
Not even building more trains, buses, and light rail can help with the traffic problem. In an interview with Streetsblog, study coauthor Matthew Turner explains that his fundamental law means that people are always waiting for extra space on the roads, and a person taking the bus simply opens up space for a new car:
If somebody stays home, or if you add capacity to the road, there’s somebody there waiting to use that space. Well you should expect the same thing to happen if somebody gets out of their car and gets on the bus, it’s bringing up a little bit more room on the roads, and there’s somebody out there waiting to use it.
This doesn't mean public transportation is worthless; it transports more people with less fuel and fewer carbon emissions. But spending more on it has no effect on traffic.
So what does help? The University of Toronto researchers offer just one suggestion: congestion pricing. It's a pain for commuters, but that's sort of the point. People are desperate to drive, so if you want less traffic, you have to make it harder for them.

Quick break while pedalling up the hilll

Hard to see, but all the trees were bent over from the continuous wind at the top of the ridge.

The river at Waimea Bay. Currently not making it to the ocean.

This was my first ride on my new Brooks B17 saddle. These are notorious for needing a break-in period. When I was looking at it before putting it on the bike, it seemed very, very hard. You can knock on it and it sounds like wood. The surprising thing (to me) was how slippery it was. I didn't see any comments on line about how easy it is to slide around on this thing. So, back to stiffness: once it's on the bike, and I rode around on it, I realized it's got a good amount of flex. It does absorb some, so even though it's stiff, it's not like riding on a plank. At this point, it's not horrible to ride, I still got sore, but not really any more sore than I usually do. I'll keep at it and see if it becomes my forever saddle (like it apparently is for many cyclists).

Here's a shot comparing the rail lengths of my old saddle and the B17. I saw some posts about how it may be necessary to get a seatpost with some setback in order to get the saddle position right. I just put it back as far as it would go on my seatpost and it seems ok.

Data captured with GPSLogger http://u.pdk.to/hBceq6 - I like it. I've got it set to log every 15 seconds, every 10 meters. That seems to be high enough resolution for bicycle riding. At least for me. :) My battery (nexus s) was at about 50% when I started and 40% when I finished.

12.5 miles according to google maps.

I found the Black Pearl parked in the harbor at Koolina. I also found a way around from Koolina direct to Kalaeloa.

tweaks on my bicycle

I made a few minor changes to my bike. I got a slightly smaller (2.1" instead of 2.25") tire in front. From what I saw online, this is not a great tire, but it may be perfect for me since I'm mostly doing road/fire road type riding. It was basically the only choice I had when I went to the bike shop.

I took off the soma clarence bar and the ergon grips. Now have some (comparatively) plain northshore lizard skins grips (customized with "phlat phrog" lock-ons, but you can't see that in the photos). Oh yeah, went back to the standard bar that came with the bike. Some specialized bar ends. And a custom-hack camera-pod made from reflector holder and a few bits (bolt, washer, wingnut) from home depot.

It was quite cold. Not exactly sure of the temperature, but in the teens. There were some parts of the sidewalk completely covered in a thin sheet of ice. I opted to ride over the crunchy frozen grass, instead. Five layers on top (rain jacket to stop wind chill, jacket, wool sweater, long and short sleeve tshirts) seems to work. My riding glove are not good enough for this cold. They let through too much air, but the ride is not long.

While I did technically make it to the north shore, I didn't go very far. I asked one of the people working on the anti-predator fence how far to the road and he said a couple more miles. I'm not sure how accurate my end point on this map is.

Here is my bike in billy goat mode. In one direction I went over the upper path (carrying and pushing the bike, riding is impossible) and on the way back, I took the "short" route across the gap. This required moving the bike, then moving me, then moving the bike, etc.

Went for a ride today. About 10 miles. From Kapolei Park to Electric Beach and back. And a bit of the Kapolei badlands (behind the court house, where Kapolei Parkway will be).

Went to HIFF (honolulu film festival) last night and saw a couple flicks. The local fixie crowd showed up to watch to live and ride in LA so I got pix of the piles of bikes, but we didn't actually see that flick.

We saw Bill Cunningham New York first, which in a way is a bicycle film since he goes everywhere in New York on a bicycle. The film was really good. Clearly a lot of research. I recommend it if your interested in either photography or fashion.

The second film we saw was one kine day, a local film made on the windward side of Oahu. I really enjoyed it. Some of the photography was not quite top notch, but the story was good and down to earth. The crowd was good fun, and there was a Q&A at the end.

Grace Park of Hawaii Five-O was sitting a couple rows ahead of us. I like Hawaii Five-O, but was thinking that it would be really good for the show if as many people as possible involved in the creation of that show would watch this movie.

hawaii five-o premiere, waikiki, 13 sep 10

I attended the premiere of the new Hawaii Five-O (reboot) TV show down in Waikiki. I was worried about the crowds and parking and traffic, so I parked at BestBuy in Honolulu and rode my bicycle over. I arrived too late to get a good spot. After doing my circumambulation, I ended up leaning on the keep-the-little-people-out barrier by The Red Carpet. I think I stood there for about an hour and a half. Since The Stars were surrounded by The Press as they walked down The Red Carpet, the people standing around (me and 500 others) could not really see The Stars at all.

Empty seats, waiting for the VIPs I guess. See the crowd. See the crowd waiting.

And waiting. Dunno who this is. I think he got up on stage and played a guitar, but couldn't see. She was obviously not a real copy, but neither did she seem to be associated with the TV show. I have no idea why she dressed in that costume. People who deserve to be in a photograph.

Cool hat. The mob. All together now: snap! A favorite of the mob: There were many shouts of "Hurley!" and "Jorge!" (Jorge Garcia) Cars were the first "stars" on the red carpet. Apparently Chevy has a role/many roles in the new show.

I took off before the show actually finished, so I avoided the mob-dispersal madness. It was fun biking back across Honolulu at night. Of course I had my please-don't-run-me-over lights (head light and tail light).
